In Casey Dancer, memoirist Kristin Casey examines a less familiar stage of recovery: the period after substances are gone, when old ideas about love, work and self-worth remain.
In hot yoga, holding a pose through force alone can make the body more rigid. Strength matters, but so does the ability to adjust, breathe and recognise when persistence has stopped being useful. To always prioritize form over depth.
For Kristin Casey, that tension became a way of thinking about life beyond the studio. She knew how to work, endure discomfort and survive instability. She was less certain about when to soften, when to trust and when to walk away.
That conflict runs through Casey Dancer: A Memoir About Dating, Stripping, and a Little Hot Yoga, which follows Casey through several years of sobriety, financial uncertainty and complicated relationships in Austin, Texas.
The memoir continues the personal history introduced in Rock Monster: My Life with Joe Walsh, her account of a six-year relationship with the Eagles guitarist and the addiction and emotional upheaval surrounding that period. Yet Casey Dancer is not primarily concerned with the dramatic moment of collapse. It looks instead at what comes afterward.
By her late thirties, Casey had been sober for eight years. She was selling residential real estate, returning to stripping when money became uncertain and continuing to pursue writing whenever work and exhaustion allowed. Alcohol and drugs were no longer directing her choices, but sobriety had not automatically given her healthy boundaries or made emotional closeness feel safe.
In material prepared around the book, Casey describes “quitting substances” as “barely half the battle. That distinction is central to the memoir. Recovery may remove one form of escape while exposing the habits and fears that existed beneath it.
When Instability Feels Familiar
Those habits become particularly visible in Casey’s relationship with Lalo, a charismatic former drug dealer she meets during the period covered by the book.
Their attraction develops quickly, but the relationship is marked by conflicting expectations, emotional uncertainty and the weight of both partners’ histories. Casey does not present Lalo simply as the source of every problem, nor does she describe herself as a passive observer of the relationship.
Instead, the memoir considers why a person can recognise instability and still remain drawn to it.
Casey understands that certain boundaries are being tested, but understanding a boundary is different from enforcing one. She can identify a pattern while still hoping the outcome will change. The relationship becomes less a straightforward warning about the wrong man than an examination of the difference between emotional intensity and genuine intimacy.
That distinction is not unique to Casey’s circumstances. People often return to familiar dynamics even when those dynamics leave them anxious or dissatisfied. Calm can feel unfamiliar, while uncertainty may be mistaken for chemistry.
The memoir’s interest lies in that uncomfortable gap between awareness and action.
Three Kinds of Work
While Casey’s personal life occupies much of the narrative, her working life raises a different set of questions about identity and respectability.
She moved among three professions that offered very different kinds of value.
Real estate appeared conventional but did not always produce dependable income. Stripping could provide money more quickly, though it placed demands on her body and required a different form of emotional management. Writing offered neither immediate stability nor predictable recognition, yet it was the work she continued to imagine as her future.
At times, these occupations overlapped in ways that made their supposed differences look less meaningful. A real-estate client might appear at the club. A customer might ask about the housing market. Casey could move from discussing property to performing in a VIP room and then return home to work on a manuscript.
The contrast is easy to sensationalise. Casey’s account is more concerned with the practical realities of labour.
Stripping involved physical stamina, competition, customer management, appearance, performance and the constant calculation of whether a night’s work would justify its costs. It could provide income and independence, but it also placed Casey in an industry where ageing and injury had immediate financial consequences.
The book does not settle the familiar argument over whether sex work is empowering or exploitative. Casey’s experience contains agency, pressure, skill, fatigue, humour and risk, sometimes at the same time.
Treating sex work as work allows those contradictions to remain visible.
The Woman Living It and the Woman Remembering It
Casey Dancer also includes material drawn from blog entries Casey wrote while many of the events were taking place.
Those entries introduce a second perspective into the memoir. The younger Casey does not know where a relationship will lead or which decision she will later regret. She records attraction, confidence, uncertainty and frustration without the clarity that hindsight eventually provides.
The older writer can recognise patterns that were less obvious while she was living them. But the earlier writing prevents her from turning the past into a perfectly organised lesson.
The result is a conversation between experience and interpretation: the woman making the choices and the woman later attempting to understand them.
This structure matters because memoir can easily make change appear more orderly than it was. Once an author knows how events concluded, there is a temptation to make every earlier moment point neatly toward that conclusion. Casey’s contemporaneous writing preserves the confusion.
Her growth is not presented as one decisive breakthrough. It appears through repetition, contradiction and delayed recognition.
From Personal History to Professional Work
Casey later completed training with the International Professional Surrogates Association, followed by a supervised internship. She also earned certification in sexuality counselling and worked for six years as an intimacy coach and surrogate partner.
Her clients included men dealing with dating anxiety, sexual dysfunction, porn dependency, performance anxiety and difficulty with emotional closeness.
It would be convenient to treat this later career as evidence that the questions explored in the memoir had been permanently resolved. Casey’s own account suggests something less final.
Her personal history gave her a practical understanding of how people can seek connection while protecting themselves from it. She knew that sexual confidence did not necessarily lead to emotional openness, and that revealing the body could feel safer than revealing fear, need or uncertainty.
Her professional training gave that understanding a framework. The experiences described in Casey Dancer gave it context.
The movement from sex work to intimacy work is therefore not a simple reversal. Both placed Casey close to questions of desire, performance, loneliness, shame and human connection. What changed was the position from which she examined them.
Writing eventually became another way of doing that work.
No Clean Before and After
Casey Dancer does not divide Casey’s life into an irresponsible past and an enlightened present.
The woman who stayed in difficult relationships, relied on physical work, struggled financially and questioned her judgment is not erased by the woman who later became an author and intimacy professional. The later understanding develops from the earlier confusion.
Hot yoga provides an appropriate metaphor because it offers no single instruction that works in every situation. Some moments require endurance. Others require adjustment. Sometimes progress means holding the pose; sometimes it means admitting that force is causing harm.
Casey’s account applies the same uncertainty to relationships.
Persistence can be mistaken for loyalty. Independence can become isolation. Desire can resemble intimacy without creating trust. A boundary can sound convincing until maintaining it threatens the connection a person is afraid to lose.
Sobriety gave Casey the opportunity to confront those distinctions without chemical escape. It did not answer them for her.
That is the territory Casey Dancer records: not the dramatic act of surviving, but the slower work of deciding how to live afterward.
